Skittles explained: what is beneath the colourful shell?
Classic Skittles Fruits have a crisp outer shell and a chewy centre. They are fruit-flavoured sweets, not chocolate buttons. Chewies remove the shell for a softer format, while Squishy Cloudz are a different, airy sweet. The Skittles name does not mean every pack has the same texture or recipe. [1][2]

What is the centre of a Skittle?
The UK Fruits description identifies a chewy centre beneath a crisp shell. Its declaration lists sugar, glucose syrup, fat, starch-related ingredients, acids and flavourings; the centre is not a miniature piece of fruit.
This guide focuses on the shell-and-centre construction. The separate question of the glossy finishing coat is covered in our guide to shiny sweets, linked below. A shell and a final glaze are not interchangeable terms.[1]
Are Skittles chocolate sweets?
Classic Fruits are fruit-flavoured chewy sweets with a crisp shell, not chocolate-coated pieces.
Skittles Fruits vs Chewies vs Squishy Cloudz
The difference becomes clearer when you compare named formats. Fruits gives an initial shell crunch followed by chewiness. Chewies is described as having no shell. Squishy Cloudz is marketed as an airy, soft sweet.
The UK Squishy Cloudz declaration checked here includes gelatine. The classic Fruits declaration differs. Do not apply a dietary statement about one Skittles product to everything sold under the brand name.[1][2][3]
Which Skittles pack should you choose?
Choose the texture first, then check flavour range and quantity. A Fruits bag, a bottle and a Cloudz pouch are different products, even when their colours look similar in a small online photograph.
For mixed bags, do not plan an event around an exact number of each colour. The official Fruits information notes that the mix can be uneven. The HRS links below identify the format so you can check weight and pack quantity before checkout.[1]
